Project Risk Workshop
Create greater certainty around your project's outcomes.
An independent, facilitated risk workshop for project and programme teams who need to surface, challenge, quantify and take ownership of the risks that matter.
For major projects and programmes where understanding uncertainty, exposure and potential outcomes matters.
Talk with GarethFor projects that need greater certainty
A Project Risk Workshop may be right for you if:
- You are approaching an important cost, programme or delivery decision
- You need greater confidence in forecast outcomes
- Your project involves multiple stakeholders, organisations or contractors
- You need to understand where the greatest areas of uncertainty and exposure lie
- Your existing risk position needs independent challenge
- You want to bring the right people together to create a shared view of project risk
- You suspect there are risks, assumptions or concerns that are not yet fully visible
What a Project Risk Workshop helps you do
By the end of the intervention, your project team will have:
- Surfaced risks and uncertainties from across the stakeholder group
- Challenged assumptions and potential optimism bias
- Developed a stronger shared understanding of project exposure
- Assessed and prioritised the risks that matter most
- Improved clarity around causes, consequences and potential impacts
- Strengthened ownership of risks and mitigation actions
- Created greater confidence in the project's likely outcomes
Why invest in a Project Risk Workshop?
Major projects operate in environments of uncertainty. Cost, programme, technical performance, stakeholders, interfaces, resources, supply chains and external events can all influence the eventual outcome.
Yet effective risk management is about more than maintaining a risk register.
Risk management is a process. Risk identification is a behaviour.
The quality of the project's risk picture depends upon the quality of the conversations behind it. People need to be willing to raise concerns, challenge assumptions, share different perspectives and discuss uncertainty openly. Leaders need to create the conditions in which those conversations can happen.
An independently facilitated Project Risk Workshop creates the space to step away from day-to-day delivery, bring together the right perspectives and develop a clearer collective understanding of what could affect the project and what needs to happen next.
The Project Risk Intervention
This is a short, focused project intervention rather than a long-term consultancy assignment.
A typical engagement takes place over approximately three weeks:
Week 1 β Discover
Understand the project, its objectives, current position, stakeholders, existing risk information and the outcomes required from the workshop.
Week 2 β Intervene
Design and facilitate a focused workshop bringing together the people with the knowledge, experience and perspectives required to understand project uncertainty.
Week 3 β Embed
Consolidate the findings, clarify priorities and actions, and provide a structured output for the project leadership team.
The exact approach is tailored to the scale, complexity and maturity of the project or programme.
HOW IT WORKS
How the Project Risk Workshop works
01 β Discover
Review the project context, objectives, existing risk position, key information and stakeholder landscape. Agree the purpose of the intervention and the decisions or outcomes it needs to support.
02 β Prepare
Identify the appropriate participants and perspectives. Review relevant project information and design the workshop structure, questions, exercises and risk framework around the specific project.
03 β Surface
Bring the key stakeholders together. Create an environment in which participants can surface uncertainties, concerns, assumptions and risks from their different perspectives.
04 β Challenge & Quantify
Explore the most significant risks in greater depth. Challenge assumptions, examine causes and consequences and assess probability, impact and potential exposure using an approach appropriate to the project.
05 β Own & Act
Prioritise the risks that matter. Clarify ownership, potential mitigations, immediate actions and areas requiring further investigation or management attention.
06 β Report
Consolidate the workshop outputs into a clear record for the project leadership team. Capture the significant risks, themes, actions and observations arising from the intervention.
What you leave with
Depending upon the agreed scope, outputs can include:
- A consolidated view of the project's principal risks and uncertainties
- Prioritised risk areas
- Agreed risk owners
- Mitigation and follow-up actions
- Areas requiring further investigation or analysis
- Key themes and observations from across the stakeholder group
- A structured post-workshop report
- Clear next steps for the project leadership team
The objective is not simply to produce more risk information. It is to help the project leadership team understand what matters and act on it.
Investment
Project Risk Workshops typically start from:
Β£4,950 + VAT
This normally includes:
- Initial discovery meeting
- Review of relevant project and risk information
- Workshop research and preparation
- Workshop design
- Facilitation of the Project Risk Workshop
- Consolidation and analysis of outputs
- Post-workshop report and recommendations
Larger or more complex project and programme interventions are scoped according to the level of preparation, stakeholder engagement, analysis and facilitation required.
Who you'll be working with
I have spent more than three decades working across engineering, infrastructure, utilities, major projects, programme management, consultancy, organisational transformation and leadership development in the UK and internationally.
I understand the realities of major-project environments β the technical complexity, commercial pressure, organisational interfaces and human dynamics that influence whether projects succeed.
Today, my role is different. I don't manage your project. I help your project perform.
I provide short, independent interventions at critical moments in project delivery, combining project experience with facilitation, analysis, leadership development and an understanding of human behaviour.

Project Risk: The Human Side of Managing Uncertainty
A practical, evidence-informed insight paper exploring why effective project risk management depends on more than processes, registers and quantitative techniques.
It examines the human factors that influence how risks are identified, discussed, challenged, understood and acted upon.
Inside, you'll explore:
- Why project risk is as much about behaviour as process
- How optimism bias and assumptions affect project judgement
- The importance of different stakeholder perspectives
- Psychological safety and people's willingness to surface concerns
- Constructive challenge and decision-making under uncertainty
- Risk ownership and accountability
- How project leaders can create better risk conversations
